Naxos

Aeolos Sunny Villas is located in Agidia Village, which is located just five minutes from Naxos Town (Chora). Agidia is indeed a suburb of Naxos Town.

Naxos Town, the capital and port of Naxos Island, is a lively and cosmopolitan town that attracts thousands of visitors each summer.

Naxos, the largest and most fertile of the Cycladic islands, lies almost at the centre of the Aegean.

Meadows running down to vast beaches, cliffs sinking suddenly into the sea, rocky mountains side-by-side with fertile valleys, abundant springs and streams these are just some of the features of a natural environment marked for its variety.

The coastline of Naxos is abrupt on the south side and more sheltered to the west, with numerous inlets and sandy beaches.

The island is first heard of in the myths and then mentioned throughout every period of history, though it was at the peak of its glory during the period of the Cycladic civilisation.

The huge gate of an ancient temple, which we see on the hill in the left as we come in the harbor, is the trade mark of Naxos, the largest island of the Cyclades. The natives call the gate Portara. Actually this gate is the entrance to the temple of Apollo. It's a beautiful island with a great variety of sceneries.

Many Byzantine churches, the oldest in Greece, picturesque towers and the two Kouros remain to show us the glory that the island once had.

There are many interesting monuments dating from several different eras scattered about the town, including some fine Byzantine churches, the Kastro with its tower and loopholes and the remains of a Mycenaean settlement at Grotta.

The island's Archaeological Museum contains some remarkable exhibits.

With so many traces of life in ancient times all over the island, Naxos offers many interesting sights for the visitor to enjoy.

Not far from Apollon, one of the most beautiful seaside villages situated in the north of the island, is an ancient marble quarry at the entrance to which lies a huge half-finished kouros dating from the 6th century BC. A similar one is to be found at Melanes.

There is also an interesting Archaeological Museum at Apirathos, a village that still keeps its own special customs and traditions very much alive.

The Church of the Panagia Protothroni at Tragea and the Church of the Panagia Filotitissa in the village of Filoti are worthy of a visit.

Good beaches for swimming are to be found at Agios Prokopios, Mikri Vigla, Kastraki, Alykos, Agiassos (on the western side of the island), Apolonas, Psili Amos and Panormos.

The magnificent sandy beaches, picturesque villages and numerous monuments and sites attract a large number of visitors to Naxos every year, and the excellent tourist facilities available make it easy for the visitor to explore the island.
